On the Champagne wine trail in Bar-sur-Aube

Discover the Côte des Bar on the champagne route

On the champagne road

The Champagne appellation covers 2 departments: the Marne, which produces 70% of Champagne wines around the great houses of Reims and Epernay, and the Aube, with the Côte des Bar.

Long in the shadow of the Montagne de Reims with its more confidential productions, today the Côte des Bar stands out for its freshness, novelty and dynamism.

Discover the Champagne vineyards of the Côte des Bar from our unusual village of Bar-sur-Aube for an enchanted stay in the heart of nature, amidst the vineyards of the Aube region.

The history of La Côte des Bar en Champagne

The Côte des Bar has only been awarded the appellation “vins de champagne” since 1927, at the price of numerous conflicts to obtain this recognition.

Before 1927, the Côte des Bar was used as a subsidiary grape-growing area. The major Champagne producers came here when there was a shortage, or when merchants were unwilling to pay top prices for grapes from the “official” regions.

This frustration has led to a strong desire on the part of Aube winegrowers to have their work recognized as part of the official Champagne vineyard territory.

The quality of Côte-des-Bar champagnes

The majority grape variety is pinot noir, followed by pinot meunier and chardonnay, and the vines are planted on clay-limestone soil. This combination results in champagnes of great elegance and finesse. The winey character is particularly appealing to fans of Burgundy wines.

Further north on the Côte des Bar is the famous Les Riceys rosé, produced exclusively in the Côte des Bar, at Les Riceys near Bar sur Seine. This rosé wine is made in a way that is unique in France, giving it its unmistakable taste.
